Lyric Writing for Musical Theater

Description

Students enrolled in this course will learn the craft of lyric writing that effectively supports storytelling of a larger narrative work. The class will include surveying lyrics of the musical theatre canon, as well as discussing the power of form, rhyme, meter, density, economy, clarity, and scansion. Once students have an understanding of the rules of lyric writing craft for musical theatre, they will be encouraged to break the form in innovative ways to support their narrative.
