Rob Mathes is an Emmy-winning, Tony- and Grammy-nominated arranger/composer and music producer/director. He’s produced recordings by Sting, Rod Stewart, Carly Simon, Bettye LaVette, Vanessa Williams, and Panic! at the Disco. He won the Emmy for his decade-plus long musical direction of the Kennedy Center Honors. He directed Obama’s Inaugural for HBO and PBS’s Great Performances 40th Anniversary. He orchestrated many Bruce Springsteen records, including his film Western Stars. He orchestrated K-Pop Demon Hunters and has arranged for a myriad of artists, including Elton John, Tony Bennett, Lou Reed, Mavis Staples, Jay-Z, Beck, Beyonce, Fall Out Boy, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Bono, Eric Clapton, and classical artists such as Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, and Yo-Yo Ma.
He’s written scores for two HBO films, Thurgood starring Lawrence Fishburne and Herblock, both nominated for Best Original Score Emmys. Mathes has written songs for Bonnie Raitt, Aaron Neville, Vanessa Williams, Faith Hill, and Rascal Flatts, among others, and he co-wrote several songs with Sting for his album and Broadway show The Last Ship.
He arranged and conducted the song scores for the films In the Heights, The Greatest Showman and Tick, Tick… Boom!, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. He orchestrated Weezer’s record OK Human and conducted the concert film with the LA Phil. He conducted the New York Philharmonic for the 2022 opening of David Geffen Hall. Rob has several records of his own, most notably Evening Train and Orchestral Songs, recorded at Abbey Road.
