Culminating Experience

While in the Writing and Design for Musical Theater (WDMT) specialization, you will discover, develop, and complete the first draft of an original full-length musical. Throughout the year, you will learn how to apply the craft and skills of the art form to create, develop, showcase, and promote your musical. Whether you create the musical alone or with collaborators, your Culminating Experience (CE) musical will take shape and evolve throughout all three semesters.

Timeline:

Semester One

You will identify potential collaborators, propose story ideas, and receive final approval from faculty. You will begin writing, developing, and rewriting your work with feedback and critique from faculty and guest artists.

Semester Two

You will continue to write and develop your culminating experience musical, generating and presenting work in a workshop setting to faculty and guest artists in the industry. With the guidance of your advisor, you will rewrite and shape your story, characters, scenes, and score as you work towards a completed draft.

Semester Three

You will complete the first draft of your CE, including the book, lyrics, and music, as you continue to workshop new material. You will also experience a rehearsal process and performance to showcase a portion of your musical in collaboration with professional directors, music directors, designers, and actors.
